Launched in 2004, Grace for Africa has grown into a partnership of more than 60 U.S.-based charitable organizations working on the ground in Africa to solve the complex, inter-related challenges facing the continent.
Grace for Africa supports its member organizations in a number of ways. We:
- Facilitate participation in workplace, online and other public funding programs
- Create public awareness and educational campaigns on African issues
- Promote collaboration among our members by serving as a forum for discussion, a clearinghouse for shared results, and a greenhouse for nurturing and planning future projects
- Develop partnerships to pursue development projects on the ground in Sub Saharan Africa
The Combined Federal Campaign
For more than four decades, the U.S. Government has sponsored the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)—the world’s largest workplace fundraising drive. In the last quarter of every calendar year, CFC invites civilian, military, and postal employees to support eligible national and local charities. In 2015 the CFC raised almost $178 million in pledges on behalf of U.S. charities throughout the country and abroad.
Facilitating participation in the CFC is a priority for Grace for Africa. Grace for Africa works with eligible charities to ensure that they meet the CFC’s standards of fiscal accountability, governance, and programmatic impact. These standards are some of the most rigorous in the giving community and thus provide the basis for admission to Grace for Africa. Grace for Africa is the only federation of organizations participating in the CFC that is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa. Grace for Africa works with its members to compile their CFC applications, serves as primary liaison to the CFC, and processes all payments. This saves our members significant time and resources.
Federal employees choose the charities they wish to support from a list of charities that have submitted applications and been deemed qualified by CFC staff. Employees may give once or request that a specific amount be withheld from their paychecks throughout the following year. The overwhelming majority of employees elect the ongoing payroll deduction program.

Grace for Africa conducts public awareness and outreach campaigns, particularly around the time of the CFC campaign. The goal is to raise awareness of the work and accomplishments of Grace for Africa members, thereby giving them a “leg up” on garnering the attention of Federal employees as they make their designations.
Grace for Africa brings its members together to discuss issues of interest, including their accomplishments, challenges, and goals. Meetings are opportunities to share information, learn from each other, and develop collaborative relationships.
Internet Giving and Outreach
The effective use of interactive technology is now an essential component of every nonprofit’s success. Grace for Africa facilitates its members’ use of the internet by creating a central location for those interested in African causes to find organizations that they can trust. The Grace for Africa web site highlights the stories of our members, facilitates online giving and provides a clearinghouse of our members’ volunteer opportunities.
